DEEP REDUCTION

Deep Reduction
Title: Black Tulip  -  Company: Get Hip  -  Cat No: gh211
Format: 7" single  -  Released: 1997  -  Status: Currently in print

Deniz had scored the job producing The Stump Wizards' album Contains Lead. While they were in the studio they cut this single using the moniker Deep Reduction.
The Stump Wizards had wanted to record with Deniz during their sessions, so these two songs were quickly finished from rough musical ideas that Jack (Gotta Say No) and Deniz (Black Tulip) already had.

The lyrics were penned on the spot, and the songs done live, the entire recording took less than 2 hours. The particular sounds chosen resulted in a jagged, raw overall noise something like you would get if the band had been live in a small club with brick walls.

Deep Reduction is the name of the studio band formed by Deniz with members of the Stump Wizards. Designed to do simple and basic roots music that for whatever reason did not suit the members parent bands, Deep Reduction continued to record after the underground success of the first single, Black Tulip. The music is a blend of garage punk/pop with electric blues and psychedelia thrown in. Vocals are shared.
The album was recorded mostly live in 5 days using vintage Fender, Marshall and Ampeg amplifiers. The original album art was totally rejected by the record company, having apparently produced a violent reaction in the owner. Replacement art was found, which features flood aftermath photos and a quote by Howlin' Wolf, but the band feels the first cover was much better and hope to use it at some time in the future.

After the completion of the first Deep Reduction album, the original bass player had departed and been replaced by guitarist and 60's beat style guru Jonathan Sipes of Omega Men spy-fi fame. The new line-up diligently recorded tracks for their second album, but failed to find the right vocal approach. Having multiple singers seemed to diffuse the focus of the music and the excellent backing tracks languished until a better idea came along. While the band was touring Europe the plan was born to ask Rob Younger to step in and take over the vocal responsibilities.
Rob agreed, and was given the green light to rewrite lyrics and melodies as needed. Rob worked with the songs for a few months, then travelled from Australia to Al Cox's Studio 213 in Mechanicsburg PA. The vocals were redone, and a couple of extra tracks added. Rob and Deniz supervised the mixes. Rob's unique and strong vocal approach seemed to be exactly what was needed to unify and focus the album, simply titled "2"
